SMITH COUNTY CHAPTER

TENNESSEE RIGHT TO LIFE

     Chapter Newsletter

March 2010

For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.               Psalms 139:13-16

Thanks for the great attendance at our last chapter meeting in February. It is encouraging to have great support and help with our chapter work. I am glad that you are inviting your friends to attend. Keep it up!

Health Care Bill

The President and the Congress are still searching for a way to pass the massive health care bill. On February 25th. the President meet with a group of members of Congress to try to work out some sort of an agreement, since the separate bills passed in the House and the Senate can't be agreed upon by the whole congress. He has now come up with his own version of the bill but he seems to be basing it more like the Senate version which includes massive funding of abortion. At this special meeting in February, House Minority Leader John Boehner wrote a letter to the President asking him to invite Congressman Bart Stupak since he is leading the democratic opposition of abortion coverage in this bill. But Stupak was not invited. John Boehner also brought up the fact that one reason the bill has not passed is the public opposition to the abortion provisions in the bill, to which the President shook off as just a 'talking point'. Later House Speaker Pelosi repeated the statement that the current bill under consideration does not contain taxpayer funding of abortion.
There are those that predict that they will find some way to pass this bill with the abortion coverage and that is the reason that we still need to be alert and continue to voice our opinions to our elected representatives, especially Rep. Bart Gordon. If you live in other areas, contact your members of Congress and let them know that we do not want any health care bill unless it includes the Stupak amendment restricting the funding of abortion in any part of the bill.

Freedom From Abortion Coercion Act

This is a bill that has been introduced this year in the Tennessee Legislature sponsored on the House side by Rep. Susan Lynn. This bill (HR3301) would require all facilities that perform abortions, to place signage that lets people know that they cannot be forced or coerced into having an abortion. About 64% of women reported they were pressured by others to have an abortion. This pressure comes from; parents, the father of the baby, and the facility.

Last week, February 24th, was to be the first hearing in a subcommittee. In that hearing pro-abortion members of the Tennessee House lead my Rep. Henry Fincher of Cookeville delayed the vote in the subcommittee claiming that the wording in the proposed signage was not understandable. Bill sponsors are working with our prolife lawyers on making some changes to the wording. Another hearing will be on March 3rd.
There is a companion bill in the Senate, but no action has taken place on that bill as of yet.

2010 High School Oratory Contest
We are well under way with our contest for this year. Materials have been sent out, it has been publicized and hopefully our young people are preparing. I have contacted community leaders about being on our panel of judges. Remember the date of our contest will be April 13th. so if you know of some young person who might be interested, let them know there is still time to enter and prepare. Details are available on our website.

Women's Day On The Hill
This annual event for 2010 will be on Wednesday, March 31st. This is open to everyone, especially women to assemble and to speak to our Tennessee Legislators. This year the special speaker will be Abby Johnson who you may remember, was the former Planned Parenthood director in Bryan TX who resigned last year after seeing an ultrasound image of a baby.
The event will begin at 9:00 am. with an update on the legislative news, then we are sent over to the State Capitol offices of our legislators to speak with them and urge there support for our prolife bills. Last year we in Smith County were warmly welcomed by both Senator Mae Beavers and Representative Terri Lynn Weaver both of which are very supportive of our efforts.
Then we come back to the hotel to have lunch and to hear from the speaker. There will also be a silent auction fund raiser held in conjunction with the event. I would encourage you to attend a take part in this and I know you will enjoy the day. Those attending are asked to preregister by March 24th. by calling Nancy Wike at 615-298-5433 or emailing nwike@tnrtl.org. The cost is only $25 per person again this year.
